Churches working together in Northern Ireland

Dear Guest,

How can churches and schools collaborate to build peace and connection in a historically divided society? We cordially invite you to an exclusive and inspiring study programme in Belfast, from Monday 12th to Thursday 15th October.

During this intensive four-day visit, we will explore various educational institutions. We will engage with key stakeholders, church leaders, and academic experts to discuss the unique role of education in post-conflict Northern Ireland.


Programme

Monday 12th October: Arrival & Introduction

  • Until 15:30: Arrival in Belfast and hotel check-in.
  • 16:00: Welcome and introductions at the historic St Anne’s Cathedral.
  • 17:00: Tour of St Anne’s Cathedral, including a short organ recital by Ian Bell.
  • 18:00: Introduction to the Northern Irish education system by Ian and Peter.
  • 19:00: Welcome dinner.

Tuesday 13th October: Integration & Community

  • 09:30 – 11:30: Visit to Lagan Integrated College (Belfast). Main theme: How do joint school chaplains work?
  • 12:30 – 13:30: Lunch (expected attendance by the Archbishop of Armagh).
  • 13:30 – 14:30: Visit to Seagoe Church of Ireland Primary School (Portadown). Exploring primary education and the link between church and community as the last remaining Church of Ireland school.
  • 16:00 – 17:00: Guided tour of Belfast.

Wednesday 14th October: Governance, Politics & Academia

  • 09:30 – 11:30: Visit to St Columbanus College (Bangor). The most mixed school in Northern Ireland, where local Catholic and Anglican clergy govern together. Featuring a traditional Irish music group.
  • 12:30 – 14:30: Lunch and visit to Stormont (Parliament Buildings). Briefing by the Department of Education on how the school system is administered.
  • 15:00 – 17:00: Visit to Stranmillis College (Initial Teacher Training College). Lecture by Prof. Noel Purdy: How the Protestant churches influence schools in a post-conflict society.
  • Evening: Informal social gathering at the historic Crown Bar.

Thursday 15th October: Leadership & Closing

  • 09:30 – 11:30: Visit to Methodist College (Belfast). School governance talk led by Methodist leaders.
  • 12:30: Closing service in the Chapel of Peace at St Anne’s Cathedral.
  • 13:00: Programme ends and departures.
